Loma Prieta Chapter Cool Cities Campaign
Resources
for Cool Cities Teams
The Sierra Club’s Cool Cities
Campaign is a grassroots effort to persuade local governments to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions in their communities. We are bringing together people
from all walks of life-- people like you! -- who want action on global
warming now. City by city, teams of residents are forming Cool Cities Teams to
urge each mayor and city council to take appropriate action and to make sure
global warming emissions are indeed reduced through their action.
The Loma Prieta Chapter is a leader in this campaign and brings the slogan “think
global, act local” to life in the Silicon Valley Region. We are
tracking the effort on a
map of cities with Cool Cities Teams in the Chapter's area -- Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Benito Counties. Learn about Cool Cities activity in your city
The Cool Cities
Campaign's Basic Steps:
Step 1. Persuade your mayor to sign the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection
Agreement (MCPA, created by Mayor Greg Nickels of Seattle) which declares: i. Global warming is
an important issue in need of action. ii. All levels of government need
to take action. iii. The mayor commits to reducing global warming emissions
within the boundaries of the city. Find out which cities in our Chapter’s
area have signed on Find out which cities in our Chapter’s
area have signed.
Step 2. Have your mayor assign city staff or establish a task force
or other body to inventory greenhouse gas emissions in the city and to devise
appropriate emission reduction targets for the city.
Step 3. Work with the mayor to develop a complete and achievable
Climate Action Plan to achieve the emission reduction targets set by the city
Step 4. Have the mayor implement specific measures to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and execute the Climate Action Plan.
Local Action is an Essential Part of Reducing the Risk of
Climate Change...
Local action is needed to support the 2006
California Global Warming Solutions Act, landmark legislation from the state of
California to establish enforceable limits on global warming emissions. This historic law
applies only to major sources of greenhouse gas emissions such as power plants
and factories. It does not cover the myriad of other sources found in a typical
city, such as business and residential buildings as well as small business
operations. The Cool Cities Campaign is taking the action required to address
the emissions from a multitude of smaller sources, all of which add up to be
significant.
We need your help. Become involved with the Cool Cities
campaign; join a team. Help us bring under control an essential piece of the
global warming emissions pie. Here are several ways you can help our Cool
Cities Campaign:
Sign
our petition urging your mayor to sign the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection
Agreement and implement it with a Climate Action Plan.
Adding your name to our petition is
important even if your mayor has already signed the MCPA. By signing, you
demonstrate strong resident support for local action to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. You also add your voice to the voices of others throughout the
Nation who want action on global warming emissions by all levels of government.
Join
a Cool Cities Team and get engaged with your fellow city residents and
local government to work for local action on global warming emissions reduction.
